2018 in technology From the future of bitcoin to Facebook,

Echo and Home will start to talk back

Both of the major smart home platforms have a long-running problem with “discoverability”: it’s very hard to let users know what their devices can do, particularly if they’re always improving thanks to rapid software updates.
Amazon and Google are constantly experimenting with ways to get around this, but so far they have been timid. Amazon sends a weekly email, while Google includes some tips in its app. Expect to see them be bolder, particularly as powerful rivals such as Apple appear on the scene with worse AI but better sound.
So don’t be surprised if your Google Home or Amazon Echo begin to talk back, rather than simply following commands. They might ask for a bit more contextual information, to better carry out the role you’ve assigned them, or they might suggest something that you hadn’t even thought to ask them, based on your use patterns (and, in Google’s case, near-omniscient knowledge of your movements and habits).
Actual conversations will probably be rare for the core assistants, though. Both companies know that they need to avoid irritating their users and are loath to insert themselves too forcefully into their lives.

But with both platforms also open to third-party developers, we can expect to see an evolution of the sort of chatbot-based narrative experiences with which organisations such as the BBC are already experimenting. Want to have Alexa acting as your on-tap dungeon master for a weekly pen-and-paper role playing game? OK, you’ll probably have to wait a bit longer for that one.

Apple reduces the price of all latest iPhones

Reduced prices are loved by the customers but not by the manufacturers, still, Apple is going to take this step to increase demand for its latest flagships. Apple is the company which normally do not run the business by tweaking prices, Apple usually does not cut prices of its products except the older models which have to be cleared before the new product is launched.<figure class="op-ad">

US tech giant might cut the prices of its latest flagships including iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus. Some reports say Apple is only considering slicing the iPhone X prices by the next year due to lower than expected demand for the phone. However, all the iPhones including iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are not meeting the sales threshold, if this is the case, then ultimately Apple has to reduce the prices of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus as well.

Some critics blame Apple itself for weaker demand, the major reason for decreased sales during 2017 is that Apple was unable to deliver much in certain regions where the sales could be boosted. Those regions were affected by the supply and demand imbalance, countries like Taiwan, Singapore and surprisingly the US as well.

According to the sources, the expected price cut is $50 initially which is not much attractive to consumers. But if the sales remain stagnant after the first slash, Apple will attempt another larger slash to push the sales.

However, the time frame for price cuts is unknown but rumors suggest Apple is going to announce new prices in the beginning of the year 2018 which go also take little longer till March when the company will host a keynote at the event WWDC 2018.

A simple hack lets you enable Fluent Design in Windows 10 Mobiles Calculator app

Earlier this year, at Build developer conference, Microsoft announced the much talked Fluent Design System, previously known as Project NEON. At the same developer conference, Microsoft also explained that the universal apps and the other elements of the Windows 10 operating system will embrace Fluent Design with the future updates.
Windows 10 Fall Creators Update also added Fluent Design effects into all first-party applications. Since universal apps are supposed to run all devices, include phones, Fluent Design is also available for Windows Phones in some application – Groove Music, films & tv for example.
Developer Isaias Leos discovered a clever hack that allows users to enable Fluent Design in Windows 10 Mobile’s Calculator app. All you need to do is sideload the new Calculator app on your phone. It’s worth noting that the Calculator app has been slightly modified to run on Windows Phones, and the performance feels a little sluggish even on high-end phones.

Enable Fluent Design in Windows 10 Mobile’s Calculator app

  • Enable Developer Mode by navigating to Settings -> Update and Security> For Developers. You can also learn the steps to sideload apps.
  • Download the Dependencies (ARM) from here. Install all of them.
  • Sideload Interop Tools.
  • Download the Calculator app from here and extract it to the documents folder.
  • In Interop Tools, navigate to General -> Applications and enable Deployment Mode.
  • In Applications page, find Calculator app and delete the entries.
  • Navigate to Register -> Browse -> Devices -> Documents -> Calculator and select the AppxManifest.
  • Register package and you’ll have the new Calculator app with Fluent Design.
Some Fluent Design effect available on Windows 10 PCs is not available on phones, such as the blurred background, as apps are running in full screen on Windows Phone, unlike the PCs. As Windows 10 Mobile is currently in maintenance mode, Microsoft won’t release the new Calculator app for Windows Phones.

Windows 10 Mobile Build 15254.16 is now available for Fast Ring Insiders

After rolling out cumulative updates to Windows Phones with Fall Creators Update, Creators Update and Anniversary Update, Microsoft has also released a new update to the Windows Insiders on the Fast Ring. Windows 10 Mobile Build 15254.16 is nothing more than a cumulative update.

On the other hand, Microsoft has released Windows 10 Mobile Build 15254.124 to the general public as “2017-12 update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for arm-based Phone Devices.”
It appears that the production build is now greater than the Fast Ring build, but only number-wise as the build for Fast Ring Insiders was compiled two days after the production build, according to a Reddit user.

Fast Ring Insiders should see ‘Windows 10 Insider Preview 15254.16 (feature2)’ on the Windows Update settings page. Microsoft hasn’t published the changelog for any of them yet, presumably, it just has minor bug fixes and security fixes.
It almost looks like you should leave the Windows Insider Program to keep receiving latest cumulative updates on your Windows Phone. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed whether there would be any more Insider builds for Windows 10 Mobile going forward, but since no new features are planned, it makes no sense for Microsoft to continue the Insider program for Windows 10 Mobile.

Nokia 9 And Nokia 8 (2018) To Be Launched On 19th January

Nokia 9 is highly anticipated as the successor the Nokia 8, and it appears that the Nokia 9 could be launched as early as the 19th of January. A new report from China claims that the Nokia 9 and a new iteration of the Nokia 8, named Nokia 8 (2018) will be launched on the 19th of January. It is worth noting that HMD Global has not announced or hinted at any new launch as of now.
The report also claims that both the phones will be customised for the Chinese market hence, may come with special ROM where Google services may be replaced by local alternatives.
The leaked specifications of the Nokia 9 include 5.5-inch QHD display. Whether this display will have an 18:9 aspect ratio is yet to be seen but, considering the phone is launching in 2018 and will be a flagship device, the bezels might be shrunken and considerably thinner than the ones found on the Nokia 8.
Chances are that the Nokia 9 will be launched in two variants, one with 6GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage while the other version of the phone may have 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
The 64GB variant of the Nokia 9 may be priced at around CNY 3,699  (Rs 35,965 approx.) while the 128GB storage variant might be priced at CNY 4,199 (Rs 40,826 approx.).
The Nokia 8 (2018) is expected to be priced similar to the Nokia 8 which was launched in India back in September at a price of Rs 36999.
Both the Nokia 9 and Nokia 8 (2018) are expected to have dual cameras at the back and have IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.
While the Nokia 8 entered the Indian market a few weeks after its global launch, it will be interesting to see if HMD Global follows a similar pattern if and when the Nokia 9 and the Nokia 8 (2018) are launched.

Microsoft and Fujitsu will work together on AI tech to transform the way people work

Fujitsu, the Japanese multinational information technology equipment and services company, today announced a new partnership with Microsoft (via MSPoweruser). The two companies will collaborate on artificial intelligence to “accelerate the transformation of the ways people work in companies.”
Fujitsu is saying the joint solutions will combine their Global Communication Platform, Fujitsu Human Centric AI Zinrai, and Microsoft AI platform services on Microsoft Azure. There are plans to make the new solutions available in the Japanese market from the second quarter of 2018 (April to June), and then globally shortly after.
Fujitsu is highlighting four key areas where customers will get value from the jointly built solutions:
  • Big data generated through use of Microsoft 365 is aggregated through Microsoft Graph, and Microsoft MyAnalytics and Microsoft Workplace Analytics, etc. visualize the usage status of email and calendars, which had in the past lacked visibility. Zinrai AI technology distinguishes the importance and priority of tasks mentioned in the body of an email, and encourages users to perform important tasks.
  • Automation and streamlining of tasks is achieved by combining Microsoft Cognitive Services and Microsoft Azure Bot Service with Fujitsu’s conversational AI technology and the Zinrai natural language analysis API, offering a more human-centric user
  • experience.
  • Using the connections among people or things is considered an effective way to find exceptional human resources or valuable documents within organizations. To this end, Knowledge Graph is used as a base of knowledge that expresses in graph form the relationships among people or things.
  • Users of Microsoft MyAnalytics and Workplace Analytics etc. can visualize the ways both individuals and teams work. Moreover, by combining and benchmarking Knowledge Graph and Fujitsu Laboratories-developed Deep Tensor machine learning technology, which enables highly accurate analysis of graph-structured data, these solutions can provide insight into how high-performance individuals, organizations and companies are working.
  • Microsoft and Fujitsu have been working together since 2002, and since 2015 the two companies have been building a strong collaboration in work-style transformation. Fujitsu, thanks to technical assistance from Microsoft, deployed a globally unified communications platform based on Office 365 for its approximately 160,000 employees.
